On White Board Quips

It’s Monday. And there’s a new post on my blog. That can only mean one thing: Time for a new white board quip!

I hate being bi-polar. It’s awesome!

But where did this all start? Well, you could click “More” under the WBQotW in the side bar, scroll to the bottom of the page, and then click “Older Posts” about fifty times (yes, really) and read my explanation on WBQotW #1. (Or I could just give you the link.) But that doesn’t really tell the whole story.

Yes the actual WBQotW (in its weekly format) started in a lowly intern’s cubicle at Hewlett Packard in 1998. But the practice of writing off-beat, puzzling, and sometimes funny quotes on a white board actually took root a bit earlier.

In the spring of 1993 (Holy Alzheimer’s, Batman! That was exactly 20 years ago!), I was attending Amarillo College and shared several classes with my childhood friend, Galyn Black. We took Calculus II in a newer class room, the first I’d ever seen with a white board. (As opposed to a chalk board. Yes, I am a dinosaur. You children can find out about chalk boards on Wikipedia along side cassette tapes, Milli Vanilli, and other aspects of the late Cretaceous period.)

At this same time, Galyn and I had become fans of the original Ren & Stimpy show on Nickelodeon. If you’ve seen any of this relic of the early 90’s, you’ll know it’s little more than a 20 minute string of nonsensical quips strung together with improbable plots and offensive characters. So, of course, I loved it.

For some reason, Galyn and I were always the first two to arrive to the class room. My compulsion to spoil empty white spaces and my fascination with the dry erase miracle (both of which are still important parts of my personality) left me powerless. I HAD to write on the board. I think it was probably Galyn’s idea to use Ren & Stimpy quotes. We would pick the most odd-ball, confoundingly out-of-context quote we could think of from a recent show and leave it on the board. Then, when the rest of the class would arrive, we would swear it was already on the board when we walked in. We were never caught.

Glorious.

Break Time!

Man it has been nutty around here lately. And there seems to be little sign of a slow down. Well… unless you count my upcoming vacation. *smile*

Memorial Day weekend, we hosted Tammy’s parents. It was great and we did a lot of touristy things that were on my “some day” list, including the G.W. Bush Library, the 6th Floor Museum, and a tour of Jerry World (a.k.a. Cowboys Stadium).

Tammy and I are heading to Colorado next week, but as seems to be the norm for me, my vacation is almost as stressful as real life. It’s going to be awesome, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve got reservations to make, trail rides to plan, off road permit stickers to buy, and work to do to get the bikes ready for 11,000 feet.

My pseudo-manic life spawned this week’s white board quip selection. It’s from a blog post by a guy from my church cataloging the bizarre and hilarious things his daughter says.

I can’t keep living like this for long. I’m going to have to go to Six Flags at some point.

Youth Mission Trip Video

Steven (high school youth minister) published the video from both middle school and high school mission trips. I went to San Antonio with the middle schoolers during spring break.

Huh huh. Huh huh. You said, “dooty.”

The Impossible Dream

I have weird dreams. No, seriously. Really really weird. All the time. I probably have totally off the wall dreams every night, but I only remember them after I wake up about half the time.

This morning, I remembered.

In my dream I was doing database maintenance. This is part of my real-life job in which I am responsible for deleting unneeded data from our databases. So far, not weird. But in my dream, I messed up one of the database commands and deleted Ohio. Yes, the state. It instantly disappeared from all maps and history books. All the buildings, people, cars, everything in the state… poof-gone. Nothing left but trees, grass and an impressive river valley (but no river, because it was named the “O” word).

I felt pretty bad about it, but apparently, there were no backup files for Ohio, so now it’s gone for good. Sorry Bengals fans!

Sad Sad Day

Well, I think we all know this day has been coming. Sadly, it’s finally arrived. I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley.

I started this blog with a joke. Back in 2004, I thought blogs were stupid. Why would anyone want to read someone else’s diary. I don’t care what you had for lunch or what the doctor said about the growth on your butt. But, as it turned out, blogging was a great creative outlet for me. And it helped my family and friends keep up with me since I am notorious for not staying in touch.

But now, with the advent of social media, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, I’ve got more creative outlets than I can keep up with! Surely You’re Not Serious has become the low hanging fruit at a time when I need to trim. I just don’t have time to maintain it. And it’s purpose has been largely replaced.

I’m not going to delete anything. Lordy! There’s way too much comedy gold here to throw anything away. But, I will not be updating for the foreseeable future. Let’s call it an indefinite hiatus. But, if you have a fever and the only cure is more Trint, just follow me on Twitter and YouTube. (I’m pretty stingy with my Facebook friend list. So, let’s just pretend that doesn’t exist and avoid all the tears and feelings of rejection.)

It’s been a great run, and I’ve had a blast. And who knows?! Maybe Twitter make me mad enough to quit and come back here! Yeah… I know. You’re right.

So, it’s only fitting to end my run with one final White Board Quip of the Week (#230):

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

That’s all I have to say about that.

54k Views and Counting!

It’s official. I’m famous. I have a video on YouTube* that has, as of this writing, been viewed over 54,000 times. How awesome is that?!

Pretty dang awesome if you ask me.

* Okay, okay. So technically speaking, it’s not exactly, totally my video, per se. But I am a primary member of the cast**. So that should count, right?

** Yes, I know that there are only three people in the whole video, but I’m one of those three, so that makes me a co-star at least***.

*** Well, who cares if I’m only in 4 seconds of a 12 minute video? I’ve still be seen over 54,000 times and you haven’t, so… Nyaa nyaa nyaa!

Seriously, for those who don’t know (which, in my reader base would be “most”), Rhett and Link are pioneers of video blogging who have multiple YouTube channels, some with over a million subscribers. When they started their latest venture, a daily video blog called “Good Mythical Morning,” they asked for subscribers to send in video introductions. I did, and last Friday, my intro made the show. It’s kind of a big deal. But only kind of.

NOOOOOO!!!

There are times when you wish you could recapture the innocence of youth. Remember how simple life was before 9/11? Remember how awesome the Matrix was before the sequels came out? Remember when girls had cooties and the only thing you wanted to do was make them cry? (Ok, me neither. But still…)

I think this YouTube clip can remind us all of that moment when life stopped being simple.

It’s Work From Home Friday! And, “Oh Fudge!” I’m asking for trouble in this one. At least I don’t have to wash my mouth out with Lifebuoy!
