Oh Snap!

I’ve not been real impressed with Ford’s real people press conference ad campaign. It feels too staged and scripted for me to believe it. But scripted or not, this one is just plain ballsy and I love it!

New Texas Laws Effective Today

If you live in Texas, you should be aware of these changes to Texas laws effective today, September 1st, 2011.

“Sexting” by a minor is now a crime.

If a minor is caught with sexually explicit messages or images on their cell phone, they could end up in juvi! You hear that, chi’ren? Not only is Uncle Trint gonna kick your butt for that garbage, you’re going to the clink!!

Nighttime speed limits are out.

State-wide, speed limits are now always the same. No more 70 daytime, 65 nighttime. No more getting tickets at dusk because you and the trooper disagree on what constitutes “night.” YAAAAY!

Castle Laws now apply to boats and employer owned parking lots!

Last year, Texas extended the Castle Law to vehicles. If you can legally own a gun, you can keep it concealed in your car. That now also applies to “watercraft.”

Problem last year was, employers (*cough* like mine) could still declare their parking lots as “gun free” and fire you for having a gun in your car, which effectively made it impossible for those employees to carry during their work week.

Starting today, that line of your employee handbook is illegal. You can not be punished for having a legally concealed weapon in your car, even parked in your employer’s parking lot. (There are limitations, so check the law to be sure.)

Today’s Groaner

The earthquake that rattled Washing D.C. has caused some damage to the iconic Washington Monument. Fox News is reporting that the monument is leaning dangerously to the left. MSNBC insists that it’s actually leaning to the too far to the right.

Today’s Groaner

Geologists have determined the quake that rattled Washington D.C. was caused by a little known fault line that runs directly through the nation’s capital.

It’s called “Bush’s Fault” and the Bronco Bomber administration, in a press release this morning, insists that it inherited all geological problems from the previous administration.

Today’s Groaner

President Bronco Bomber walks into a bank to cash a check.

Teller: We’d be happy to cash your check, sir. Just let me see some ID.

Bomber: Oh, I don’t carry ID. Everyone knows who I am.

T: I’m sorry, sir. Due to massive bank regulation, I must have an ID first.

B: Really?! There must be some other way.

T: Well, sir, last week Tiger Woods came in. He didn’t have an ID either. But, we set up a 40 foot putt in the lobby and he made it, so we cashed his check. Do you have anything you can show me or tell me about what you do as President?

B: Sorry. I’ve got nothin’.

T: Great! Do you want that in small or large bills?

How Much Is A Trillion Dollars?

I don’t think anyone can really wrap their brain around the scale of one trillion anything. But, I think it’s important that we give it a try, especially in light of the scale of our government’s budget.

Check out this site. Remember: The U.S. deficit is currently over $14 trillion and we just raised the limit to almost $17 trillion.

The federal budget is roughly $1.7 trillion in the red every year. Keep in mind, the Democratic congress has failed to pass a new budget in the last two years, so they broke the law two years in a row. What that means is that the government is spending whatever it thinks it needs without anyone telling them they’re over budget.

“It Is Insulting”

Texas State Senator Chris Harris (R-Arlington) earned his reelection this week. He sits on the Senate Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security. This committee was hearing testimony against SB9, the “Sanctuary Cities Ban” which establishes Texas law allowing (not requiring) law enforcement to ask for proof of immigration status. This law would trump local laws in so called “sanctuary cities” that tie the hands of law enforcement in those towns, preventing enforcement existing immigration law.

The important bit is just after 0:35, so you can skip ahead if you want.

YouTube link (35 seconds in)

The testimony here was given by a man who has lived in Austin for over twenty years… in Spanish. Now here’s the real kicker and what makes Sen. Harris so right. When challenged by Sen. Harris, the man responded in English! His use of Spanish despite the fact that he can speak English was a shameful stunt.

This is exactly what is wrong with the amnesty movement. They don’t want to be Americans. They want to be Latinos living in America. This nation is a melting pot. We appreciate your culture and would love to include it into ours, so long as you follow our laws and show desire to melt into our culture. But these people don’t want to be included. They want to be separate. They want to be apart. They want our social programs, our higher wages, our superior health care, but they don’t want to learn English. (Even when they already know it!) They want to leach off America’s prosperity but want nothing to do with being American.

Now, go ahead and call me a racist and an ignorant white boy. That’s exactly what I expect. In fact, it’d be even better if you did it in Spanish because that would perfectly prove my point. (And I would still understand you. I know all the good Spanish insults because I’ve heard them all before.)

I have worked with Mexican nationals who spent years working to get legal immigration status and eventually citizenship. I have also done mission work across the border in the “outer limits” where even most Mexicans won’t go. Where people live with dirt floors and canvass roofs (or worse). When I talked to real Mexicans about the suffering in these areas I was told (and I quote) “They have no water or electricity because they choose to live outside the city.” That is the party line in Mexico. That is the government stance. If you are suffering from poverty it is your choice. Why don’t you just hop the fence or swim the river and let America feed you.

The next time you meet a La Raza chanting the racism lie, ask them if they know what Mexico’s immigration policy is. Ask them if they know that, in Mexico, you are required to show your papers every time you speak to law enforcement. Ask them if they know that illegal immigrants in southern Mexico are arrested on sight; no trial, no questions; and deported across the southern border as soon as possible. Ask them if they know how many Mexican citizens hate and abuse Guatemalans, Hondurans, and any other Latinos who try to make their way north to prosperity. Because I do. I have seen these things. I have heard these things from the people who lived it. Am I still an ignorant white racist? Or are the La Razas the ignorant ones?

*Deep breath* Ok. I’m done.

An Incovenient Chart

Yyyouch. That’s got to sting a little. News like this must be painful for the Bronco Bomber.

Bronco Bomber Unemploment Chart

It’s interesting to me to see the early upturn in the graph. It corresponds exactly G Dub’s swing into the “spend your way out” fallacy. Poor George. How did he get so lost so fast?

Funny how, after it didn’t work for George, the Bomber thought adding more zeros to the budget would some how work. In fact (as you can see) it just exacerbated the problem. Hmm. Maybe those fiscal conservatives aren’t all morons after all.

A Letter to My State Legislators

I just sent off the following letter to my Texas congressman and senator. If you agree, you can do the same!

Subject: Cellphones and distracted driving.

I saw on the news recently that the Texas House is working on legislation to ban texting and driving. While I applaud the effort to keep our roads safe, I feel the approach is misguided.

As an avid cyclist and motorcyclist, I see lots of distracted drivers and I know full well that they are putting my life at risk. But I feel that cell phone use, and texting in particular, is only the latest in a long line of distractions that can kill.

Personally, I have seen a woman knitting at 45 mph, countless women leaving their lane while applying makeup, people eating, reading, attending their children, or programming their GPS devices, and all of them distracted enough that they could have easily killed someone.

I’ve also spent a lot of time thinking about enforcement and I feel we would be asking too much of our law enforcement officers to try and determine if and when a driver would be breaking a ban so specific as texting and driving.

As such, I think a state law the described a more generic “Distracted Driving” would be much more useful to law enforcement. And, much like the current seat belt law, it would easy for law enforcement to “catch” distracted drivers.

I also feel that, if well written, such a law could be used to severely punish distracted drivers who cause accidents with penalties closer to those for drunk driving. Because, quite frankly, I would be just as dead if I were run over by a drunk driver than if I were run over by a driver putting on makeup.

Please take this into consideration as this hot topic makes its rounds.

Thanks again.
